Marketed as "the snowmaking capital of the world," Hunter Mountain was the first ski area to have 100% snowmaking and the first to have automated snowmaking. Now the resort has over 1000 tower-mounted snowguns. Hunter is one of the closest major ski resorts to New York City and inspired a Japanese ski resort of the same name. The resort is considered one of the best day-tripping ski areas in the Eastern US, with skiing on three mountains, each suiting different abilities. The runs at Hunter are up to two miles (3.2 km) long on north facing slopes, with the toughest skiing, largely on Hunter west accessed by the Snowlite Express high speed quad. These include Westway, a double black diamond generally regarded as the most difficult. Forty percent of the terrain is classified most difficult but beginners and intermediates have Hunter One pretty much to themselves, with blues and greens. It's a well segregated mountain.
